Mario Mushroom Cake

Mario Mushroom for my sister's birthday party.

Made with instant mix and store bought frosting. The white spots on top and in the eyes are white fondant. The coins are plastic ones from my Halloween props and I saved the gold cake board from under a store bought cake.

I colored the frosting myself (Took soooo much red).

I shaped the cake by starting with one of those giant cupcake molds. I used a knife to shave the ridged sides off and make the dome a bit less pointy.

I didn't put a filling in it because I was worried the walls would be to thin and get to moist to support the top. But I also forgot to tap the batter before I baked it so I ended up with a big air cavity in each half that I filled in with frosting leftover from the practice cake: [link]
